Before beginning the multiplication process to grow a cherry tree, it is important to prepare the soil and ensure that it is suitable for the growth of new plants. The cherry tree prefers well-drained soils rich in organic substance. Make sure the soil is well fertilized and worked so that it provides the new plants with all the nutrients they need for healthy growth.
The multiplication of cherry trees can take place through different techniques, such as transplanting cuttings or the use of grafts. In this article, we will focus on the latent shoot grafting technique, which is one of the most common.
To get started, you’ll need to collect the necessary materials. You’ll need a healthy cherry sprig, a cherry rootstock plant, and a sharp, clean knife. Make sure the material of both plants is free of disease or pests.
Once you have your materials ready, follow these steps:
- Choose a young, healthy twig with well-developed buds to use as grafting material. Make sure the twig is not too young or too old, ideally it should be about 6-8 millimeters thick and about 10-15 centimeters long;
- Take the cherry rootstock plant and make a “T” cut in the bark, slightly above the ground, with the sharp knife. Make sure the cut is clean and precise;
- Take the selected twig and cut it to get a dormant gem with a small portion of wood from the previous year. Make sure the outbreak is well-developed and free of damage or signs of illness:
- Gently insert the shoot under the bark of the rootstock, taking care to position it correctly so that it is well attached to the wood. Make sure the shoot is completely covered by bark;
- Wrap the graft site with graft tape to protect it and keep it secure. Make sure the ribbon is tightly wound, but not so tight that it compresses the gem;
- After the graft is complete, protect the graft area from any damage or disturbance. You can do this by placing a plastic cone or a cut plastic bottle on top of the graft;
- Water grafted plants regularly to keep them hydrated and promote root formation.

After about 3-4 weeks, you should start noticing signs of growth in the grafted plant, such as the formation of new shoots or leaves. This indicates that the grafting is successful and that the plant is growing well.
