The rise of sustainable and minimalist home decor has led to a surge in creative DIY projects. One of the latest trends sweeping through the DIY community is creating modern wall sconces using toilet paper rolls wrapped in jute twine. This project is not only eco-friendly, utilizing materials that would otherwise be discarded, but it also adds a rustic charm to any room. It’s perfect for anyone looking to add a unique, handmade touch to their home decor without breaking the bank.

These DIY modern wall sconces work beautifully in spaces with a natural or bohemian aesthetic. They pair well with neutral color palettes, wooden furniture, and plants, enhancing the cozy, earthy vibe of a room. Consider placing them in a living room or hallway where they can capture and diffuse soft lighting, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. They’re also a great addition to a gallery wall, adding texture and depth among framed art pieces.

DIY Modern Wall Sconce

Materials

Toilet paper rolls – as many as needed for desired sconce size
Jute twine – approximately 50 feet per roll
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Scissors
LED tealight candles
Wall mounts or adhesive strips (for hanging)

Directions

Gather all your materials and set up a clean workspace.

Start by applying a small amount of hot glue to one end of the toilet paper roll.

Press the start of the jute twine onto the glue and hold for a few seconds until it sets.

Carefully wrap the jute twine around the entire roll, applying more glue as needed to secure the twine in place. Ensure the twine is evenly spaced and covers the entire surface of the roll.

Once the roll is completely wrapped, secure the end of the twine with a final dab of glue.

Repeat the wrapping process with additional rolls if creating a larger sconce.

Arrange the wrapped rolls in the desired pattern and use the hot glue gun to attach them together.

Securely attach a wall mount or adhesive strip to the back of the sconce.

Place an LED tealight candle inside each roll to illuminate the sconce.

Hang the finished sconce on your wall and enjoy the warm, cozy glow it provides.

Variations & Tips

To personalize your wall sconce, consider experimenting with different types of twine or rope in various colors or thicknesses. You can also paint the toilet paper rolls beforehand to add a pop of color that complements your existing decor. For a more industrial look, try using a metallic-colored twine or add small metal accents. If you prefer a more natural look, incorporate small dried flowers or leaves into the twine wrapping. Adjust the size and shape of the sconce by using different numbers and arrangements of rolls to fit your space perfectly.
