Forget building complicated wooden structures or buying plastic playhouses. You can grow a private, sturdy sanctuary in your backyard using nothing but seeds and soil. As seen in the photos, tightly planted sunflowers create solid, living walls that eventually tower over your head. This transforms an open patch of grass into a secluded retreat perfect for reading, relaxing, or giving kids a dedicated outdoor space.
Plant a Wide, Dense Foundation
To achieve the solid, wall-like effect shown in the “before” image, you need more than a single, spaced-out row of seeds. Mark out a circle (a 6 to 10-foot diameter is a good size) and prepare a wide planting bed—at least 18 to 24 inches wide—around the perimeter. Crucially, you must leave a distinct gap in the circle unplanted to serve as your future doorway.
Rely on Density for Structure
The key to this specific look—which requires no wooden stakes or support strings—is extreme density. Sow your seeds heavily in multiple staggered rows within your prepared bed. As the plants grow, the stalks will crowd together tightly. This density allows them to lean on one another, forming a unified, self-supporting mass that is strong enough to stand tall without external aid.
Finish the Interior
Once the sunflowers reach maturity, the interior of the circle will be shaded and private. To turn it into a functional “room” like the one pictured, lay down a thick layer of wood chips or mulch inside the circle to suppress weeds and create a clean, dry floor. Add a simple bench or chair to complete your all-natural escape.
